Up for auction is this awesome SUPER-RARE IBANEZ BLACK EAGLE BASS GUITAR. It was wonderfully crafted in Japan and is top quality. The Serial Number is B760172 – built in February of 1976 - the 172nd instrument of that month. The Black Eagle was part of Ibanez's Custom Series and was only produced from late 1975 to 1979.  This example is in excellent mostly-original condition and the HEADSTOCK HAS NEVER BEEN BROKEN! This is the same model that famed Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic used during their early albums – a photo of Krist’s with a broken headstock is seen in the Nirvana Bleach album sleeve – it’s on the floor beside the sprawled-out Kurt.

THIS BASS IS BEING RE-LISTED DUE TO THE DISCOVERY THAT THE BRIDGE PICKUP IS DEAD.

NOT A DEAL-BREAKER FOR MOST OF US, BUT I WANT TO MAKE THIS CLEAR.

SHIPPING AND PAYMENT INFO IS BELOW THIS LONG-WINDED DESCRIPTION:

This particular bass really looks great, plays great and sounds great. It is nearly all original – the only important modifications are cool vintage Ibanez upgrades! These include the super-cool Ibanez Heart-shaped tuners from a late ‘70’s to early ‘80’s Artist or Musician model – good luck ever finding another set of these! The plate is the same as the original – no extra holes. Sorry, the original tuners are long gone.  Other mods are the two different strap buttons from 1980’s Ibanez models and the Knobs are Fender Jazz Bass circa early 1990's.

It has been a moderate-mileage, well-cared-for player guitar for its life, and has its share of blemishes here and there – mostly in the form of some dings, scrapes, chips, scratches, scuffs and abrasions, and all the expected wear and tear on a 33-year old bass with light-to-medium use – not abuse. Included for no extra cost is medium buckle rash on the back – none of which is very deep. Despite the blemishes, it still has way most of its finish intact and quite lovely. It still classifies as excellent condition in my professional opinion – especially in light of the sad shape of so many of its brothers. None of the imperfections are a deal-breaker or overly unattractive – looks and sounds like a high-end guitar that has broken in beautifully and has many stories to tell...

The action on this bass is very nice. The neck profile is nearly identical to the 1970’s Fender Jazz Bass Neck. The inlays look great.  This neck is ‘sound as a pound’ with only minor dings and scuffs and what-not. The truss rod works perfectly and is NOT maxed out – no issues or foreseeable issues. The 3-Ply Maple laminate neck with gorgeous Maple fretboard is very stable – It’s a great neck on a great bass. The frets are original and have only minor wear. I don’t think they have ever been re-crowned – they are medium-sized from the factory. This bass is currently wearing a new, new-old-stock set of Ernie Ball .045 to .100 gauge nickel-wound strings.

The body and finish are in very good to excellent condition – I tried to highlight the worst blemishes in the photos.  Whatever is not a reflection of the lights, the camera tripod or miscellaneous other object is probably a blemish of some sort. Nothing gruesome – good old-fashioned relic-ism earned through use.  The body in made of Mahogany.  There are 3 un-original pickguard screws and a little tape residue on the pickguard near the lower tip. The bridge is original and in fine shape for its age – also no intonation issues due to placement.

The pickups and electronics are all original except the output jack – replaced with a Switchcraft many years ago. THE BRIDGE PICKUP IS DEAD AND WILL NEED TO BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED.  The pickups have been re-soldered, but I assure you, they are original to this bass. Just for the record – many other higher quality pickups (not EMG) fit just fine in the cavities. Potentiometer scratchiness is minor – everything is plenty useable and sounds great. The knobs are all early 1990’s Fender Replacements.

SUPER RARE AND SUPER COOL. THIS IS AN AWESOME BASS GUITAR FOR ANY PLAYER OR COLLECTOR!! It looks, plays and sounds fantastic – perfect for live or studio performance, video shoots or just a joy to play for the fun of it. Whoever wins this one is sure to be a happy musician / enthusiast / collector.
